It’s one thing to get along with someone short-term. It’s another thing to make a relationship last 20+ years.
Are you and him compatible long term?
Jump ahead to:
10 Signs You Are Compatible Long Term with Your Partner
Here are 10 signs your relationship will last.
1. You Both Want the Same Kind of Relationship
Some people want to see their partner every day. Some people’s ideal relationship involves spending two to three nights together. Some people would prefer to be in a relationship where you only see each other on weekends.
What’s your idea of an ideal relationship? Make sure it matches what your partner wants!
2. Family Plans
Do you want two kids? Does he want four? None?
Make sure you are aligned on family plans and figure this out early!
I’ve seen many men (and women!) change their mind over time, but it’s best if you are aligned from the start.
3. Communication
Are you both good at communicating with each other?
When one of you is upset or disappointed, can you communicate with each other and work through it?
Many divorces happen as a result of many small, little annoyances and resentments that have built up over time.
3. Interests and Hobbies
Finding a good partner is like find a good roommate in college. You both don’t have to enjoy the same music, TV shows, or hobbies – but it helps if you have at least one interest in common.
Don’t like parallel lives, yet never do things together!
The happiest of couples have similar interests. When kids come into the picture, you’ll little “me” time or “us” time. It makes things much easier if you both have an interest in common!
4. Similar Views on Money
Sex and money are two of the biggest drivers of divorce.
Do you both share similar views on money? If not, have you had an open conversation about it?
Money can cause many fights in a marriage. Make sure you are aligned on how you’ll spend money and what you’ll prioritize.
5. Chemistry
As refenced above, sex and money are drivers for divorce.
Chemistry will fade over time, but you need that initial chemistry to ensure that you’ll be able to re-ignite the fire as things become stagnant over time.
6. Similar Age
You don’t need to be close in age. In fact, I know couples who are happily married with a 20+ age difference!
But it does improve your odds if you and your partner are within three years of each other in age.
7. You Admire Each Other
Do you admire each other? If not, it’s a sign that things won’t work out long term.
When you see your partner across the room at a party, you should think, “Gosh – I’m so lucky to be with him/her.”
Lack of admiration is a sign of disrespect or disgust, which will cause problems long term.
8. You Like Who You Are with the Other Person
Do you like who you are when you are with your partner?
Are you friendlier, more motivated at work, or more likeable?
You are in a great relationship if you become a better version of yourself when you are with your partner.
9. You Smile Frequently and Are Happy
You shouldn’t expect your partner to make you happy in life, but do they make you happier?
Do you smile more?
Are you more relaxed, or more content?
These are positive signs that the two of you will work out in the long run.
10. It Feels Right
Trust your gut. If you find yourself having doubts in a relationship, asking your friends to analyze his/her text messages, or constantly asking your friends for advice on what you should do/not do in a relationship, then you are questioning yourself and the relationship. This is a red flag!
When you are in a great relationship, you can be 100% yourself. There are no doubts. Everything feels like. You just have this feeling that “he/she is the one.”
This “gut feeling,” may be difficult to see or feel, especially if you’ve never been in a 100% secure, great relationship.
But trust me. It’s so, so true.
When you know a relationship is right, you just know. It will feel like black and white.
